From Red String to Hiroshima Graph – Everlasting Flow and his recent project Code 186: Defrosting Memories (commissioned by the China Port Museum), Fujii has been highly resourceful in the way he deals with the traumatic history of Japan through individual and collective experiences; his work not only aims to re-examine the forgotten past with photographic narratives, but also serves as a warning against the repetition of history. In Hiroshima Graph – Everlasting Flow, Fujii starts from the history of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and combines the personal experience of his grandmother with archival images and photos he took on his trip to revisit the site of the bombing. In doing so, he attempts to explore the ways in which individuals hide traumatic memories, and how those traumas are nonetheless passed on to later generations. The flaming stains, black clouds, withered trees, origami cranes, and allusions to scars in Fujii’s elaborately constructed photos not only reveal the secrets and grief hidden deep inside his grandmother’s heart, but also fuel the photographic narratives that have the power to turn the unknowable into the knowable.
